Veteran opener Tamim Iqbal returns to the Test side after recovering from his groin strain
Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal returns to Test squad for the one-off Test against Ireland as Bangladesh Cricket Board announced their 14-member squad on Saturday.
Tamim missed the series against India due to injury while the squad also marks the return of Shadman Islam, Shoriful Islam and Ebadot Hossain for the Test match, scheduled at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium from April 4-8.
National chief selector Minhajul Abedin told Cricbuzz on Saturday that he is very excited with the return of Tamim while adding that on the other hand he is disappointed that opener Zakir Hasan, who made a mark in the last Test series against India, missed out due to injury
“Zakir fractured his finger and that is the reason we could not include him in the squad and it is quite disappointing considering the fact he played well against India.
“The return of Tamim will surely bolster our strength while we have also included Shadman considering his recent form,” Abedin said.
Shadman last featured for Bangladesh against South Africa in April 2022. Yasir Ali, Nurul Hasan, Rejaur Rahman and Nasum Ahmed also failed to make a cut in the squad.
BCB also included Shakib al Hasan and Litton Kumar Das despite all the drama that surrounded them following their plea to the board that they want to skip the Test series to make themselves available for Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Meanwhile, skipper Shakib Al Hasan admitted that it was already communicated to the BCCI that he would arrive late for the IPL. Pacer Mustafizur Rahman landed in India immediately after the conclusion of the T20I series but Shakib would join the KKR setup only after the conclusion of the Ireland Test.
“When the Indian Cricket Board asked ‘when I am available and whether I am available for the whole time or not’, the NOC board informed them from which point I can play and for how long. There it was stated that if we have international commitments then the board won’t allow it,” Shakib told reporters during a private event. “Had Mustafizur been in our team he had to stay. Luckily or unfortunately because he is not in the Test team he is able to go.”
